And The Beat Goes on © WorkCreated on 26 September at 3:50
And The Beat Goes on © Work
Sup,
So you know I started my new career not too long ago. Well there is drama already. I had orientation and training with three other people. One person was really young and a hot head and did not get along well with the male in the group. Once we were assigned our stations they continued to bicker. They were both canned this week. The guy yesterday and the young gal today. I silently tried to warn the man to stop arguing with the gal but he kept on until he threatened her... hot headed jarmakins. I used to have several friends from the Caribbean so I'm not passing judgment.... miss you Nancy, Garcia, and Magdala!!!!!
I suppose if either of them had read my section about co-workers they would not have lost their jobs. IT IS NOT OKAY TO ARGUE OR THREATEN YOUR CO-WORKERS. PROFESSIONAL JOBS WILL NOT ALLOW IT. So don't do it folks.... you will NOT win. Fighting or arguing in the work is unacceptable... act like children get reprimanded like children!

Have you or someone you know ever lost a job because you had argued with them? Tell me how the argument started and what was the end result?

Co-WorkersCreated on 19 September at 2:19
Sup,
Today was a rather good day (everyday I wake up qualifies as a good day as a matter of fact), the weather was near perfect, the day went by rather quickly, I scored a 100% on a proficiency test on the laws governing my occupation. I will probably forget the specifics (unless I print a copy) but I am sure on the over-all picture.
I couldn't help but assess a few of my newest co-workers. In particular there is a rather young one who has lose lips, she enjoys nodding off, and she has a crush on the VP of the company. Its probably nothing serious, but those types of things could be misconstrued and lead to something that can't easily be fixed. Another co-worker (30 something male) also has a tendency to fall asleep, he frequently interrupts conversations... but when he does so, he sorta mumbles. Poor thing is no cure for sore eyes, now you know I what I said about sexy and/or attractiveness... well... lets just say I can't see how he has four children by three different women. But then again at least two of the women are culturally distinct just as he is.

Finally, there is another young woman who isn't as bad as the other two, but she is slightly rough around the edges and has the vernacular of a sailor. Her style of dress is cheap trendy. She would look smashing if the garments and adornments hadn't come from the $7 or less. Now, I am not ragging on the two women. I know they mean well and clothes DO NOT make the person. So I will judge them solely on their character.

As for the first two co-workers, I want to steer far away from them. They are not the sort of company I would want to keep, although I will be extra civil with them... after all we did train together. As for the latter co-worker, she seems well enough to hang out with at certain functions. Her acquaintances are not folks I would want to see outside of work. Not because there is anything wrong with them, but I wouldn't want to even pass them in the street. I will, however, remember to be all smiles and greetings. Although, I doubt some of the people I encounter will be used to such niceties from strangers... albeit co-workers.

Do you have any co-workers who stand out at work? Why? Why do you or don't you choose to 'hang' out with them?

Starting a New Job or CareerCreated on 15 September at 2:50
Sup,
We have all had to start a new job or career at some time in our life. Whether it was the teen hangout burger hut or the department store nightmare, we all had to start somewhere. If you've been an avid reader of my blog, you know that I have had my ups and downs at work while I was in college and beyond.

I too have recently joined the ranks of starting a new career (many thanks to those who had faith in me to find something decent).
My new hat is labeled Recovery Specialist. I really can't elaborate on the specifics of the job, but I can say that I create resolutions for two opposing parties. I of course represent one party and it is up to me to successfully negotiate with the opposing party to adhere to my clients wishes.

Starting a new job or career can be stressful, so here are a few tips I learned about handling the stress:

1) Get a feel for your co-workers before you judge them on first impressions. They are just as curious about you as you are about them. Be sure to speak to everyone around you; no one likes to feel left out... especially by the new gal or guy on the block.

2) Know who the gossipers are... those are the one's you want to keep real close to you, yet keep your distance from. Gossipers tend to keep things going in the office and they can't be trusted. If YOU are a gossip king or queen, now is a good time to stop this immature behavior. In the end you'll have a better working relationship with your co-works, thereby having a better, more productive day at work.

3) Know the chain of command, starting with your supervisor or manager. Its imperative to know the chain of command, you can find yourself in a whole pile of sh!t like I did if you don't. If for some reason you do not get along with your supervisor or manager, be sure to be in a good light with his or her boss. You may need them if your boss wants your head on a platter.

4) Leave work at work. Often times people working in white collar fields tend to bring their work at home, this includes any negative feelings unleashed at work or actual paper work. Lawyers tend to be victims of this no-no. The best way to avoid this mishap is to prioritize and organize.
Take the work that needs to be done and organize it according to priority. That simple task will make life a whole lot easier. If you have lot of work that needs your immediate attention, don't be afraid to ask a co-worker to help you if he or she doesn't mind. You can also complete these tasks by having a "working lunch," meaning you can order take out or brown bag and continue your tasks while you eat during your lunch hour (or half hour).

5) Stress hurts... that means you can feel it. If you feel yourself tensing up or if you keep sighing. Take a few minutes to clear your mind by closing your eyes and deep-breather. Breath in through your nose and release the air slowly through your mouth. You must concentrate only on the things around you. If you share an office, go to the laboratory and try it in a stall.

Remember starting a new job or career can be stressful, but you can avoid it or reduce it if you try. Have you stressed over starting a new job or career? How did you handle the situation?

Learning From Mistakes and Learning to Move OnCreated on 14 September at 1:08
Sup,
I was thinking about the way people make mistakes and how they should learn from them as to not make the same ones again. Its incredulous the way some people keep making the same mistakes over and over again and either are too blind to realize the cycle or they just don't give a damn.
When I was a senior in high school I used to use the other students in my classroom as examples of mistakes not to make. I hope I articulated that well. For example, if I student was known to do poorly on a test or to do well on a test, I wanted to do significantly better than they did. Of course my peers did not know I used them to be a better student, but that's exactly what I did.
The phrase that comes to mind is "learn from my mistakes, or don't make the same mistakes I made." But I prefer to learn from my own mistakes and other people's mistakes. It seems like something that is common sense, but there ions of people who fail to use this mode of thinking.
I think once a person has paid the piper for their mistake they need to learn how to move on. Some people dwell on the mistakes they made in the past as excuses as to why they behave the way they do. Enough with the excuses, when you make a mistake, evaluate ways to make sure you don't make them again. Then you have to stick by your solutions and then forgive yourself. Once you forgive yourself... move on!

Have you made a mistake, you just can't move past? What was the mistake and why can't you move past it?

September 11 > A TributeCreated on 12 September at 22:46
September 11 > A Tribute
We wear a poppy
On Remembrance Day,
And at eleven
We stand and pray.
Wreaths are put
Upon a grave.
As we recall
Our soldiers brave.
A price to pay with such a high cost.
In remembrance of all the lives lost.
